While the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM) has just appointed TAG Heuer as official sponsor and timekeeper of the legendary Grand Prix de Monaco Historique, the watchmaker specializing in automobile timekeeping has just unveiled a new edition of 1,000 copies of its famous TAG Heuer Monaco replica watch with colors of… Monaco.
All those who know Monaco and who have already walked the streets of the principality have noticed that white and red were everywhere in the city since these are the colors of the flag that we find on official buildings, but also on souvenirs, postcards, etc. : a red band on the upper part and a white band in its lower part (like the Indonesian flag which is also identical; the Polish being reversed).
Between TAG Heuer and Monaco it’s a long story … The designation of the watchmaker as official sponsor and timekeeper of the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique completes its current title of Official Watch of the Grand Prix of Monaco (one of the few that not timed by Rolex) and as an Official Watch partner of the Monaco Automobile Museum.
The 12th edition of the Grand Prix Monaco Historique was to take place last weekend, from May 8 to 10, 2020 on the legendary circuit of Monaco but, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the event, like many others , has been cancelled. However, the ACM teams have already started to prepare for the next edition, that of next year.
Recall that the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique is one of the highlights of the classic car racing calendar and its passionate community of owners, drivers and spectators relish the spectacle of this historic grand prix and the warm spirit and camaraderie that reigns on the circuit.
In all, more than 200 vintage grand prix cars representing 50 different car brands are participating in the event. Selected for their historical value and degree of originality, they compete in seven categories spanning the period from the 1930s to the 1970s. The 2018 edition attracted riders from more than 21 countries.
Last weekend, the LVMH group watchmaker presented a limited edition of its famous Monaco (with manuf ‘caliber) in a limited edition of 1,000 (with the mention “One of 1000, which avoids numbering each case but which is much less exclusive for collectors) with a red and white dial, in the colors of the principality. We could also nickname it the “Monaco Monaco”.
Note the presence of a small silver logo representing a vintage car from the Historic Monaco Grand Prix, located at 1 am on the brushed red dial which immediately associates this special edition with the historic race. The whole is protected by a sapphire crystal.
The case
This 39 mm tricompax (column wheel) chronograph retains its water resistance to 100 meters. It carries the Caliber Heuer 02, a 168-component “engine” developed and produced by the TAG Heuer manufac- turer in Switzerland and which can also be found in the Autavia and Carrera collections. This automatic movement offers a comfortable 80-hour power reserve; it is visible through the sapphire crystal case-back which features an engraving of the logo of the Historic Monaco Grand Prix.
The bracelet
This Monaco is presented on a perforated black leather strap. It is presented in a red box decorated with a racing flag with a checkerboard motif – a nod to the historic Heuer watch case. This chrono is available for pre-order on the website www.tagheuer.com and in certain TAG Heuer stores, before its launch on July 27, 2020.
