Same Case

IWC takes the ref. IW377709, a watch in the collection for 3 years now, as a base for its newest IWC Pilotâ€s Watch Chronograph replica. Donâ€t be surprised to find the same case, the same display, the same crown and pushers and the same specifications. The new Pilot’s Watch Chronograph IW377724 replica indeed has the same 43mm steel case, with circular brushed surface, the same large crown/pushers, the same day-date display and a chronograph movement (calibre 79320) which is still based on the reliable Valjoux architecture.

Different Points

What changes then? First, the strap is obviously different, as crafted in green fabric and reinforced with leather on critical areas – it is the same strap as used on the 2017 IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII Edition “Tribute to Mark XI”. The main difference is, of course, to be seen on the dial. The recipe is the same as the “Tribute to Mark XI”. No more propeller-like hands, no more baton hour indexes. Instead, we have the historically-relevant baton hands, the thinner hour numerals, simple baton hands for the sub-counters, a clear 1/4th of a second track on the periphery of the dial and, important, the vintage-like faux-patina indexes at 3-6-9 and triangle at 12.

Of course, one other difference is the lume – the new model has beige lume on the markers and hands, which replicates the appearance of aged tritium on the original references 3705/6. It’s pretty remarkable that that yesterday’s launch happened in such a soft way – especially considering the amount of buzz this is liable to generate. IWC broke with the usual industry practice; there was no conventional press release announcing its arrival. The whole launch consisted of an announcement on social media. It may prove to have been a smart move, though.
